Jared Cannonier (#3) and Kelvin Gastelum (#9) are two explosive fighters who like to stand and bang. Cannonier being a counter-fighter and Gastelum being a pressure-fighter, this bout is bound to be a techniques show with a high chance of a knockout on either side.

What does Cannonier need to do to win?
Cannonier and Gastelum are both strong and explosive athletes, however, out of the two fighters Cannonier is much bigger and size will play a big factor in this fight. Over the years, Cannonier has made huge improvements in how he approaches his fights; carefully selecting his striking options. Gastelum on the other hand likes to put constant pressure and throw punches and punches. Cannonier needs to “get in the zone” (which he usually does so well) with his guard up and pull Gastelum with movement and counter as Gastelum comes forward. Cannonier needs to use his size and patience to negate Gastelum’s pressure and speed then counter Gastelum with heavy strikes. This will make Gastelum more hesitant and that is when Cannonier needs to start doing some kick-work to the legs and body. In the latter rounds when both athletes’ cardio declines, Cannonier can exchange punches more freely.
What does Gastelum need to do to win?
Even as a smaller fighter, Gastelum has an advantage over Cannonier in the grappling department. Gastelum needs to look for takedowns as much as he can, especially in the early rounds to slow Cannonier and take away some of his power. While Cannonier likes to pick his shots, Gastelum on the other hand likes to overwhelm his opponents with volume. Gastelum needs to put the same level of pressure against Cannonier, however, with this fight Gastelum must end his striking sequences with kicks. This will allow Gastelum to overwhelm Gannonier and at the same time decrease the risk of getting counterpunched. Gastelum must utilize his speed with distance management to avoid getting hit. Putting too much pressure from close distance against a guy like Cannonier could cause Gastelum serious trouble.
Prediction
This is a very even match, both fighters possess the tools to level and even outdo each other. Who wins this fight is largely dependent on who is better able to change and adapt their game plan as the fight goes on. Given that Gastelum (compared to Cannonier) has to make slightly more adjustments in his striking rhythm in this particular fight than how he normally fights, I think Cannonier has the advantage by a small margin.
